I've had quite a few OBE's myself. I might be able to help a little, at least in describing what it's like.
First off, it happens to me spontaneously when I'm in between sleeping and waking. It usually requires waking up at some point in the middle of the night, then falling back to sleep while staying awake on some level. Focusing on breathing and raising energy while falling asleep seems to help. I can usually feel it coming on because I'll feel a rush of energy coursing through my entire torso. It seems to correspond to where the 7 main chakras are located, and the energy usually seems to be moving from base to crown, almost like a stream of energy passing through. It feels like a vibration. As I drift into the experience, I can still sense my body, but the environment in the room and the house often changes. Sometimes I'll hear people walking around outside, or walking through the hall, I'll hear a radio playing, or other strange noises. The body feels stiff, and it takes a lot of difficulty to move my arms or legs. It can be a bit scary, especially if there are weird noises or you think you hear people. If I get too scared, I can take a series of fast breaths and that brings me back out. But if I just melt into it, eventually I'll feel my astral body start to come loose.
When that happens, I can move my astral arms while my physical arms stay still. Even with my eyes closed, I can start to see my astral body, almost like a second set of eyes. Once I start feeling loose, I can roll over. Even though I can still sense my physical body, and know it's still in the same position, my astral body will have shifted. I continue doing this, loosening more and more, eventually rolling over all the way like I'm on a rotisserie. Once I make a few rotations like that, I'm usually loose enough that I can pop out.
Another technique I've used is to channel energy through my legs, causing them to act like rocket boosters. I know it sounds crazy but it works! One morning I had about 3-4 OBE's in a row, and I used that exit technique every time and it worked.
Another common exit technique I've heard of (but never tried) is imagining a rope, and pulling yourself out of your body with the rope. Basically what's happening is you're playing tricks on yourself to make yourself believe you can exit. At that point intention takes over and does the rest. That's really the key - intention.
Once out, sometimes I have trouble controlling my movement. I might be stuck up around the ceiling, or I can't quite control my direction, so I just start repeating affirmations to myself like "I'm in full control of my movement." Do that a couple times and like magic, I'll suddenly find myself standing upright, able to move around normally.
I hope that helps!
Oh, and I would highly recommend reading some books on the subject. The best are ones by Robert Monroe, William Buhlman, and Robert Bruce. That should give you a real good idea of what to expect. Just reading about it and focusing your attention on the subject can make it happen, because again, it's all about intention.
